Spiral staircase
Spiral elements are added to linear traditional architecture to create a sense of motion in the room. Along with the gentle staircase, traditional architecture is embellished with modern elements.
Giboshi (Ornamental railing)
This traditional ornamental element can be seen on the handrail pillars of staircases and bridges of shrines and temples.
Antique stair bolts
Bolts from when the building was first built can be seen along the banister. As a typical Showa era building, it is supported by modern structural elements.
Glass door design
A swastika-shaped ornament. A style both Eastern and Western in appearance, the design absorbs a variety of different cultures.
Reception window glass
With 4 sheets on the right and 4 on the left, the glass has different textures and colors.
Counter
Rather than kneeling on the tatami, the counter height is at standing level, a sign of Japan’s modernization.
Counter supports
The counter top supports are in the art deco style, which was popular around the world at the time.
Wood underneath counter
The use of three different types of wood heightens its decorative affect.
Entrance tile
Vividly colored tile in the manner of kagai buildings gave visitors a cheerful greeting.
Sunken fireplace
One sat down before the sunken fireplace. Hakoya waited here.
Reinforcing elements
A structural reinforcing lattice wall installed during the 2019 restoration and repair.
Go tenjo (Coffered ceiling)
A rectangularly assembled lattice ceiling. The lattice materials are very elaborately worked to create an elegant finish. The ceiling panel as well is a prized single plank of cedar.
